Determination of bacterial rod shape by a novel cytoskeletal membrane protein Here, Hironori and coworkers identify RodZ as a novel cell shape-determining protein in E. coli. Surprisingly in light of its primary sequence and membrane protein topology, RodZ forms cytoskeletal spirals similar to the bacterial actin homolog MreB, and exhibits a similar loss-of-function phenotype with loss of bacterial rod shape. |

Gudermann and colleagues now report that GPCRs, and not TRP ion channels, are the primary mechanosensors in vascular smooth muscle, mediating activation of TRPC channels via intracellular signalling. |

Cancer induction by restriction of oncogene expression to the stem cell compartment Here, Sanchez-Garcia and colleagues show that restricting oncogenic BCR-ABL expression to stem cells is sufficient to induce highly penetrant leukemia. This disease can be treated by ablation of the stem cell compartment, providing further support for the cancer stem cell hypothesis. |
 | Common thiolation mechanism in the biosynthesis of tRNA thiouridine and sulphur-containing cofactors The ubiquitin-related urmylation pathway has recently been implicated in tRNA sulphur modification in yeast. Shigi et al. describe here a similar mechanism for bacterial tRNAs, which interestingly also seems to contribute activated sulphur to the evolutionary related thiamin cofactor biosynthesis. |
